"Seeing students strive and really become better people than the person that I am. That's the best thing ever. I want my students to be better than what I could ever be."
Kimberly Tarvis is an Assistant Professor of Dairy Management the State University of New York at Cobleskill. Her teaching areas include reproduction, dairy herd management, dairy records management and hands-on dairy techniques. She is also adviser to the Dairy Cattle Club, the largest club on campus, and coaches the Dairy Challenge Team, which finished in third place at this year's Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge in April.
She is currently developing projects to enhance the learning environment in Animal Science at SUNY Cobleskill, from utilizing the Google Glass in Animal Science lectures, to safe raw milk production with Cornell QMPS and NY Ag & Markets, Groenhorst University (Holland) Dairy Work Experience Exchange Program, and new course work in advanced dairy records management, research methods, advanced dairy management and milk secretion.
Her array of activities for both current and proposed research projects in reproduction include exploring in-vitro techniques to increase the fertilizing capabilities of sperm, IVF techniques in cattle, sheep and goats, advanced cryopreservation techniques of gametes in all species of livestock. These projects thrive on collaborations between private, state, and federal agencies, such as the USDA, and Colorado State University.
Aside from teaching and research, Kim enjoys quilting, playing fetch with her dog Aspen and learning from students. She is very excited to be a part of the Cobleskill community.
She received her M.S. in Biomedical Sciences from Colorado State University in 2013, focusing on sperm cryopreservation and andrology, under the mentorship of Dr. James K. Graham. She received her B.S. in Animal Science from Kansas State University in 2009 and A.A.S. in Beef & Livestock Studies from SUNY Cobleskill in 2007.
