What is ANSC?

ANSC is the course prefix used for Animal Science classes at SUNY Cobleskill. Together with Plant Science, Animal Science boasts one of the largest departments on campus. We offer a variety of different degree programs, tailored to specialized or diverse learning in different animal industries. These include the following:

To meet the needs of students in each of these degree programs, SUNY Cobleskill has built the facilities warranted for "Real Life, Real Learning." Classes utilize a variety of resources, including a 200-cow freestall barn with double 8 herringbone parlor, livestock barns and a new beef barn, equine arena, paddocks and stalls, a retro-fit canine training facility, along with the state-of-the-art Center for Agricultural and Natural Resources, which houses classrooms, teaching laboratories, and all of Animal Science faculty. The best part of the new Center includes the only USDA-inspected meat science laboratory on a campus in New York State, which has the capacity to teach students about the beef, poultry, swine, goat and sheep meat industries. The college is host to teaching herds that include a primarily registered Holstein dairy cattle herd, with a few Brown Swiss, Jersey, Red & White Holstein, and Milking Shorthorn dairy cattle, Boer meat goats, a variety of breeds of sheep and chickens, market hogs, gilts and barrows, and meat rabbits. Students work with all these livestock species to strengthen their knowledge and skills in their chosen Animal Science industries.

What is campus like, you ask? The best part about SUNY Cobleskill is it's atmosphere; the college is one of the smallest in the SUNY system, with one of the lowest student to faculty ratios in the state. Students have increased opportunity for one-on-one learning, and getting to know each other, as well as their professors, in a more intimate setting. There are endless possibilities outside of the classroom, including international programming, undergraduate research opportunities, work study experience to those who qualify through financial aid, volunteer and special project work experience, club and residential life engagement. Animal Science students participate in a variety of clubs, including American Animal Producers Club (Block & Bridle), Dairy Cattle Club, Post Secondary Agricultural Students, Canine Club and Pre-Vet Club. Students also have the opportunity to participate in Animal Science competitions including:

Our students have made us proud over the years, landing positions at some of the largest agricultural companies in the world, to starting their own businesses right here in New York State, to advancing with further education in their field to become professors themselves. The opportunities in Animal Science are endless. This year's 2015 graduates are going onto veterinary school at Kansas State University, University of Guelph and Ross University to name a few, others are starting positions at large dairy farms in western and northern New York, New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health, United States Department of Agriculture, Accelerated Genetics, Dairy One, Genex Cooperative, Renaissance Nutrition, and many other companies and organizations too numerous to list. Agriculture, especially Animal Science, is one of the fastest-growing industries in the country, with many positions available to all abilities, experiences, interests and facets!

We welcome you to check us out for yourself, via the internet, a phone call to any one of our faculty members or by stopping by and seeing what we have to offer in person. This is not only for prospective students, but for those in industry alike, who share the same passion and commitment to agriculture as we do. Our doors are always open for continued learning, lifelong partnerships, enhanced work experiences and future endeavors. Join us in ANSC for "Real Life, Real Learning," Coby Tiger Style!
